How browser-side image compression works here
This compressor re-encodes JPEG, PNG, or WebP in the browser. .jpg and .jpeg are the same image format — people type compress jpg; that URL now redirects here instead of duplicating the page. Nothing is uploaded — the bytes stay on your machine.
Pick a target file size in KB or a quality level. JPEG and WebP search quality until the file fits; PNG is lossless, so the only in-browser lever is downscale. If the browser cannot encode WebP we save JPEG instead, still smaller, still private.
Use it before emailing photos, filling upload forms with size limits, or publishing images on the web. Screenshots and UI chrome belong on the PNG tab — forcing them through JPEG adds ringing around text. Camera photos should stay JPEG or WebP. Old /compress-png and /compress-webp URLs redirect here so Google sees one compressor with format tabs, not three near-identical landings.

- Can I compress to an exact file size?
- Yes. Target-size mode adjusts quality (JPEG/WebP) or downscales (PNG, which is lossless) in your browser until the file fits the KB budget.
- JPEG vs PNG vs WebP — which tab?
- JPEG for photos and email caps. PNG for screenshots and UI chrome (forcing those through JPEG rings the type). WebP when the destination already accepts it; if the browser cannot encode WebP we save JPEG instead.
- Is my image uploaded to compress it?
